I am looking to produce MEFs (mouse embryonic fibroblasts) and I wonder if the strain of mice have some influence (needs to be a specific lineage) or if I can use any (BALB-C, NOD-SCID).
We make MEFs all the time from different genetic backgrounds. I am not aware that there are any differences you need to control for. Fibroblasts grow well from most any mouse strain we have used.
Dear Prof. Dressler, I am wondering whether Kunming mice or CF-1 mice derived embryonic fibroblasts could serve as the feeder cells of iPSC generated from Sprague Dawley rats fibroblasts?
If you are using drug selection for generating iPSCs or ESCs and want to culture on MEFs, you can obtain DR4 mice from the Jackson Laboratory. DR4 MEFs have resistance to 4 commonly used selection drugs.
