Hi, I am using ebselen drug in some in vitro experiments and I get very different results using culture media containing or not phenol red. In literature I found that most of times ebselen drug is administred to the cells in the absence of phenol red but I can not find a clear source indicating the reason why. Is there a known interaction between these two comping that can explain these discrepancies?

Phenol red increases the total antioxidative capacity of cell culture media because of its radical scavenging capacity. Ebselen acts as a cytoprotective agent via its antioxidant effect. So, phenol red potentiate the activity of ebselen.
