To be therapeutically effective any drug should show minimum toxicity towards any major organ such as liver, kideny, heart or lung. So any drug which is showing low IC50 does not means it will be effective as it may show toxicity towards normal cells and organs.
Thanks Dr.Naveen Kumar and Dr.Ali Abdil for your valuable inputs! Sudip then I follow you up with one more question - does it imply ayurvedic and unani preparations, therefore may be therapeutically inefficient as they have IC50 values that are almost invalid!
Owing to its unique metabolism and close relationship with the GIT, liver is susceptible to action of drugs including herbals and other foreign chemicals. Certain drugs taken sometimes within therapeutic ranges may cause hepatotoxicity. A considerable number of drugs have been implicated in causing liver injury and it is the most common reason for a withdrawal of a drug from the market. A drug to be a safe and efficacious therapeutic candidate should have minimal toxicity to vital organs like liver, kidney. It is, therefore, in the drug development process and prior to their introduction in therapeutic use, drug screening assays are essential with stem cell-derived hepatocyte-like cells, that for early detection of hepatotoxicity.
