Is the seed of a miRNA functionally separate to the rest of the sequence?

The 7 nucleotide seed is the target for binding to the right mRNA to silence its transcription. Is this mini-sequence functionally separate to the remaining 15 or so nucleotides or does it interact with the rest of the sequence in some way?
