I find that Viper is really useful. It highlights the similar sections while searching the web. I get to know the similarity index, and which parts need a citation. I am concerned that I don't plagiarize others, and don't plagiarize myself because I have several studies on music mnemonics in teaching biological processes. But citing my previous work is fine. I AIM AT LESS THAN 30% SIMILARITY INDEX, BUT I HAVE PAPERS ARE AT 1%, 3%, 20%. So I just think of Viper as a friendly tool, as useful as a spelling checker. Besides, it's 'free'.
Of course I understand the sense of que the question. The real issue however is not whether is using for writing a thesis, but, rather, whether it is useful for checking up whether a thesis is original or not. And that is quite a different matter.
My answer, therefore, is yes. It is extremely useful to find plagiarism of those students that are writing a thesis.
Any tool, which curtails or fights plagiarism, is useful in my view. In fact, I wish for more efficient software tools that eradicate dishonesty in research publications. By now, many RG colleagues know that research papers are not always genuine even if they are published in journals (that were made famous).

Plagiarism detection tools are just machines and they can make mistakes. However, that is true with any tool as, for example, you don’t discard Microsoft Word because you can make a typo.
If used correctly, a plagiarism detection service will alert someone to the possibility of plagiarism, not to its actual existence.
