I am studying the Matanza Riachuelo River. Is a poluted water course of Argentine and its sediments are poor studied. My work is in organic matter, I study the C/N ratio just to study the origin of the organic matter but the antropogenic influence makes the results no so clear. But if I calculate the OSI it is well related to the pollution of the river.

The correklation between sediment organic content and pollution is based on two assumptions: a) organic pollutants prefer to partionate into organic phase; b) organic content is maximum into the fine sediment fraction. But this rule, which is used for example in the equilibrium partitioning method, is valid for lipophilic compounds (which partitionate into the organic pahse) and partially for metals (which concentarte into the fine fraction). So "traditional" toxicity appears to be correlated with organic content.
Bur this generalisation does not take for other kinds of emerging pollutants or polar-semipolar compounds (such as e.g. alkylphenols), which interacts also with cationc exchangers of the clay fraction (which is nevertheless maximum in the fine fraction). Summarising, what I try to explain is that the organic fraction is not always the key factor, but there are also some indirect correlations.
Hi Stefano. I agree with you. The advantage that I found with the OSI is that I can separate basin areas that have aquagenic organic matter than contaminated zones with waste waters. The Matanza Riachuelo River is polluted by organic matter and metals down stream and is a complex mixture to study.
