In the wild, adult Drosophila eat yeast on fruit, and transfer yeast from fruit to fruit on their feet to infect more fruit and grow more yeast. Do they also eat the fruit itself? As adults? As larvae?
In the lab, adding live yeast to the top of the medium increases growth and fecundity. Presumably that is also because they are eating the yeast. What portion of their diet is the medium itself vs. the microbiome growing on the medium? For adults vs. larvae?
