Should the scholars at RG and elsewhere be alarmed by the press reports on the influence of the unholy alliance of big money and theology on high-value scientific research, particularly on theoretical physics and cosmology?

I share your fears.
We have to note that religions seize the 'Big Bang' as a scientific description of the act of creation. Otherwise we have to note that science insist in old theories and shows a considerable resistance to unpleasant facts and experimental results.
The experimental setups of many scientific projects are not financeable without the 'Big Money'. It expected compensatory measures. Last but not least we should keep in mind politics. Research funds will be awarded for mainstream science or to found political intentions.
But what are the conditions of 'Big Science' as you designated? One example: The evidence of 'Quarks' on the LHC was a more disastrous failure. Not only the 'Quarks' do not exist. The theory of the 'Big Bang' has also gotten the mortal blow. But the scientists discuss also at RG the 'Quarks' and 'Big Bang' as though nothing had happened.

Thanks for sharing my fears. I quote below comments of Albert Einstein dismissing any possibility of “black hole” (and elsewhere also of "gravitational waves") even in theory and one of Geoffrey Burbidge dismissing the possibility of “Big Bang” creation of the universe.
But “Experimental proofs” of “black holes”, "gravitational waves" and “Big Bang” etc., are being claimed with impunity and some are receiving Nobel Awards.
If the definitive and considered opinion (going against officially endorsed science) of scientists like Einstein and Burbidge have no value, then what meaning is there for any serious efforts from lesser scientists like us?
Einstein: "The essential result of this investigation is a clear understanding as to why the "Schwarzschild singularities" do not exist in physical reality. Although the theory given here treats only clusters whose particles move along circular paths it does not seem to be subject to reasonable doubt that mote general cases will have analogous results. The "Schwarzschild singularity" does not appear for the reason that matter cannot be concentrated arbitrarily. And this is due to the fact that otherwise the constituting particles would reach the velocity of light.
This investigation arose out of discussions the author conducted with Professor H. P. Robertson and with Drs. V. Bargmann and P. Bergmann on the mathematical and physical significance of the Schwarzschild singularity. Burbidge: “By 1982, when a conference on cosmology was held at the Vatican, a new approach was taken. The radicals around, such as F. Hoyle, V. Ambartsuminan and this speaker (to mention a few) were not even invited. The conference was confined completely to Big Bang cosmology and its proponents.
In fact in the introduction to the published volume of the proceedings of the meeting (Pontifical Academy of Sciences, 1982) it was emphasized that only believers (in the Big Bang) were present; and that there was clearly a deliberate decision of the organizers”. Dear Stefan, Thanks for your input. It is true that famous scientists all through history were passionate giants who never compromised on the question of truth; in some cases, even in the face of persecution and death; the reason why scientists earned so high esteem among the general public.
But if we go by the reports linked above; there seems to be serious breach of integrity and the legendary passion for truth, among some top tier modern scientists. It was never the case in history that the ruling authority could influence scientific research and its conclusion; with the lure of fame, fortune and funds! Parasitic monopoly capitalism seems to have corrupted natural science like never before! There must be organized efforts to counter this menace.
