Depending on how closely you want to replicate the system's behavior: 1. The goal of FEM simulations is to solve the system's governing equations while taking geometrical configurations, boundary conditions, and physical effects like fluid-structure interaction, etc. into consideration. 2. The simulation may naturally capture some of the impacts that the end correction improves for in theoretical models if your mesh and boundary conditions are optimized. 3. In theoretical models, the end correction factor is often used to account for simplifying resulting from the assumption of ideal conditions. The best approach is to compare your simulation results against experimental data including end correction factor.
Amit kumar Jha Thank you for your response. I have not seen anyone take this effect into account in simulations anywhere, but one reviewer asked me about it in one of my papers, so I am slightly confused.
Case 1: Suppose I am using narrow region acoustics within the pressure acoustics module, and let’s say the hole thickness is 1 mm and the diameter is also 1 mm.
Case 2: Suppose you have a perforated plate with the same diameters and thickness as mentioned above.
When I use the interior perforated plate within the pressure acoustic module in COMSOL, it requires an end correction factor. However, when I use poroacoustics (e.g., JCA), there is no option for an end correction. I hope you understand my question.
Amit kumar JhaI I have gone through the governing equations of pressure acoustics (inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation), narrow region acoustics (inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation with adjustments for viscous and thermal effects), poroacoustics (Helmholtz equation with frequency-dependent density and speed of sound), thermo-viscous acoustics (linearized Navier-Stokes equation), and pressure acoustics (interior perforated plate: linearized Navier-Stokes for acoustics with additional complexity to account for thermoviscous boundary layers and impedance matching at interfaces) and found an interesting difference: the end correction option is only available for the interior perforated plate (because Maa theory is applied here). Hence, there is no need to include the end correction factor except for the interior perforated plate.
There is no need to include end correction in general in numerical acoustics, as the Finite Element setup does not need to be corrected. The correction is needed for models that approximate the acoustic behavior, such as Narrow Region Acoustics model that approximate exact thermoviscous behavior, or the Interior Perforated Plate which again uses an analytical expression to approximate exact behavior.
