Teaching is considered to be one of the most prestigious and noble professions all over the world. Is teaching a most desired profession now? Do the present students have a tendency to keep away from teaching profession? What are the prospects and challenges of teaching profession in the coming future?
In my view i don't think it has the lustre it used to have from years passed. In the UK at least it is very much associated with pressure and stress at the moment. A lot of young graduates i have met at the moment just have no interest in teaching, they have seen the pressure it involves, long hours and relatively low pay just does not seem to appeal.
In my point of view, teaching is being more and more difficult due to obsolete methods and social representaions which overhelms students' minds. So, teachers have to find ways in which motivate students and connect their informal learning to their formal education.

However, as Martina Gaisch mentioned, it is more an individual choice. What is noble to me might not be as noble to you, etc. Moreover, it is true that quite many students nowadays are keeping away from this job (i.e. in Romania, many of them are thinking of something else which is better paid). In terms of new challenges, I think socializing more, integrating more perspectives, a multicultural approach, are some of the issues to be taken into account. Actually, I am really interested in finding new better approaches in education in a multicultural environment. If you are also interested, maybe we could work together in small-scale project for this.

People who want to become teachers need to complete teacher training at a university or approved tertiary institution (through a three- or four-year undergraduate programme or through a one-year post-graduate programme). Today’s employment market is very
different and most young people entering it are likely to change jobs up to six or seven times in their careers. With fewer jobs for life, teacher training routes should also adapt. Teaching has been/is/will be very popular, attractive and prestigious profession for those who has vigour and attitude for teaching. Those enter in this profession by force, never being popular among them.
It is a service oriented and missionary profession.
Every body can't enjoy this profession.
Teaching can be also done not face to face but on a philosophical and theological basis, teaching whole mankind.
Teaching is a way of life. I believe one takes teaching as a profession basically because it is his calling first and financial gain only next. Teaching is rarely a lucrative job. One must have the desire to really share their talents, knowledge and passion to others to be a teacher. But one must also have the patience, real concerns to the students and the ability to teach before becoming a professional teacher.
Teaching for me will always be attractive as long as there is the desire to share ones knowledge to others.
Maybe teaching is also a matter of style. Maybe we would prefer teachers who transfer a consistent set of symbols to their students allowing them to build up beautiful structures and additions to their lifes by the teachers consultative support. In our present world teachers might be highly thought, that mybe don't teach their pupils only how to use Google and Skype to get information, but also how to philosophize while walking through nature in a beautiful and romantic landscape.
In India, after the revision of pay scales of teachers, teaching profession has become attractive, if not prestigious one. After revision of pay scales, the migration of teachers to other countries is stopped some extent.
To me teaching is the best profession. I had aspired to be a college/university teacher since I was in B.Com.I, I kept an eye on it, and kept working in the direction. Fortunately I am university professor today. Teaching is not not every body's cup of tea. It requires patience, perseverance, commitment and above all the Passion. People afraid of performance appraisal may not opt for teaching as this is the only profession where performance is assessed every day and may be twice of thrice.
This may depend on a country. In Estonia, schoolteachers earn less than the country's average salary, and university lecturers earn just a bit more.... So, selecting this profession will not result from the wish to earn a lot: it's rather a feeling of the mission to educate people.

there are two ways of looking at the present scenario:
one is when we just look at the system, IT IS CORRUPT....rather than IT IS DAMN CORRUPT, this is filling negativity in us .... on the other hand we have to look after our family and other social needs...
Privatisation is exploiting us ... look i have all the essentials for the post of assistant professor like masters, M. Phil. and the NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY TEST and pursuing Ph.D. also .... but what i am getting .... just Rs. 22000....
expenditure is : 4000 electricity+ 300 water+ 900 LPG+1000 mobile+6000 ration + 500 telephone + 3000 transportation + 3000-4000 other households + medical etc. ...the total becomes 18800-19800.... Now how a person can manage his family with rest of money with other needs... including clothing, social meetings, house maintenance, entertainment etc. etc.
one more thing it is me that i am getting such amount ,,,,whereas most of my colleagues are getting 8000 to 12000....
And we are talking about NOBILITY OF TEACHING....
inflation is increasing day by day.... what a common man can do?
Another is ... FOR THE SAKE OF A MISSION,,,, SERVING PEOPLE WITH EDUCATION... that is another way and that can only be attained if you are single...and without social responsibilities .....
on the whole ... i am managing the situation because i wanted this profession.... I am doing my responsibilities ....honestly I am serving the students .... but also getting exploited...
Dear Sudev , though there are a lot of controversies regarding the view, I think that teaching was a prestigious profession to a great extent in the past, it is same now-a-days and it will be exactly same. The main challenge for the future will be availability of key resource persons who can enrich their teaching sessions with technological advancement growing with time.

Teaching is not an attractive and prestigious profession nowadays in my country. This a problem for at least last 25 years. Society without proper value system do not bring too much prestige to teachers. On a contrary! Non-educated politicians contribute to bad status of academic community!
Assuming that all people are interested in learning, teaching is (should be considered) a very noble and attractive profession. Unfortunately, it seems that not all persons are sensitized for educational development (they may have other priorities).
Dedication is absolutely necessary especially for teaching. If the person is having DEDICATION then teaching profession will be honored as prestigious and noble profession. Vice-versa is not going to be true in teaching profession
