I have tried it but doesnt work, im trying zarrouk medium and it seems working well. Im trying the medium by Andersen (Spirulina Medium (Aiba and Ogawa) Hope it works, I got the Spirulina from UTEX.
Spirulina is one of those things that grows for a while and then dies for no obvious reason. It will grow in BG-11 plus 100 mM Sodium carbonate and 1 M NaCl.
The cosmic organic goodness Spirulina pills you can buy in health stores are usually viable and you usually can get a culture going by just throwing a pill into some sterile medium.
Yes, Spirulina Spp can growing in BG11 culture medium, but Zarrouk medium is better than other culture media for growing Spirulina Spp in laboratory scale.
In oder than, Zarrouk’s medium (ZM) was the best medium in terms of biomass productivity, while BG11 medium gave the highest chlorophyll, carotenoid, phycocyanin, and allophycocyanin contents.
I have grown Spirulina platensis in BG11 medium. It didn't yield the same and since the salinity and buffer capacity is so low you have to work really sterile to do so. Many other algae and alike can grow in it compared to Zarrouk's medium where the pH and salinity keep the contaminations out or dormant. So it can be done but it is harder.
I have made this page listing all the medium, and their recipes, that have been used to grow Spirulina: https://www.healthalgae.com/spirulina-medium/
