SMC was initially built for nonlinear systems, while MPC was designed for linear systems to anticipate for desired control and after that there have been developments for nonlinear system. in fact each method has a specific domain or it can gives excellent performance. Also we can add the two method in same application.

As Dr. Mohamed-Mourad Lafifi said, Model Predictive Control(MPC) is a model based control but Sliding Mode Control(SMC) is model-free control. MPC is an optimal controller suitable for constrained system but SMC mainly used for uncertain plant.

MPC requires a powerful processor to perform real time calculation to run, but SMC has very simple calculations.

In my opinion, the choice of controller type depends on the type of plant and control specifications as well as hardware cost.

The main advantage of MPC is its ability to provide constraints on Input and States while its drawback is the computational time as an optimization problem is solved at each time step. However, using advanced optimization techniques , this problem can be addressed. The main advantage of SMC is its ability to reject disturbances and deal with system uncertainties better than MPC while its drawback is the chattering effect which is again addressed in literature by different techniques.
