Hi everybody I have studied some papers in which, it is observed that the refractive index of specimens increases. authors attribute their findings to the increase of the crystallinity of samples (based on XRD patterns). Also, in some papers, it is observed that the refractive index of specimens increases. authors attribute their findings to the decrease of the crystallinity of samples. It seems that one of these interpretations is wrong. Is refractive index increases by increasing the crystalinity or decreases? thanks.
Crystalline solids are anisotropic and have long range order and therefore show directional difference in their physical properties including refractive index. Directional change in properties may mean increase or decrease when the property is measured along a certain direction or axis.

According to your response, it sounds that there is not any clear prediction about the increase or decrease of the refractive index with increasing the crystallinity of samples. It may be increased or decreased correspondingly to the angle between the incident photons and the crystalline growth direction.
