Syringing and probing is a common office procedure for oculoplastic surgeons to assess the patency of the lacrimal system. In a patent lacrimal system, the balanced salt solution will pass through to the nasopharynx. This will cause the patient to cough. As COVID-19 is mainly transmitted by respiratory droplets, cough from a COVID-19 positive person is highly infectious. Furthermore, during syringing, the surgeon may inadvertently touch the patient’s conjunctiva. Direct contact is another major route of COVID-19 transmission. Studies have warned that coronavirus was detected in the tears and conjunctival secretions of patients with COVID-19. Considering the risks of syringing in contracting COVID-19, it should be avoided as far as possible.
