Hello! I am pursuing Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from Sambalpur University, India. My thesis topic broadly focuses on physico-chemical analysis of water and soil samples. I eagerly want to incorporate a modeling approach into pre-existing databases for water sample and soil sample parameters. Which type of machine-learning languages will be helpful for me?

The first step in choosing the type of ML algorithm is understanding what type of outcome or value you would like to predict.
If what you need to predict is categorizable, for instance "safe", "unsafe" and "undetermined" you may need to explore classification algorithms such as XGBoost, SVM, Naive Bayes, etc.
If what you need to predict is a numerical value, such as "amount of pollutants" then you will need to explore regression algorithms, for instance, Linear Regression, Ridge Regression, etc.
In more complex scenarios, or where the inputs are images, sounds or natural language, you may need to use Artificial Neural Networks.
Regarding programming languages there are many choices and depends on preferences and previous experience which one is best for you. Python, in my opinion, could be the best choice as it is the most widely used, fairly easy to learn and there is a large and helpful community behind it.
R: Often used in statistics, R offers a strong foundation for data analysis and visualization. Packages like caret, mlr, and randomForest provide various machine learning algorithms. While R can be less intuitive for beginners compared to Python, it excels in statistical modeling.

Machine learning (ML) methods are having a huge impact across all of the sciences. However, ML has a strong ontology—in which only the data exist—and a strong epistemology—in which a model is considered good if it performs well on held-out training data. These philosophies are in strong conflict with both standard practices and key philosophies in the natural sciences. Here we identify some locations for ML in the natural sciences at which the ontology and epistemology are valuable. For example, when an expressive machine learning model is used in a causal inference to represent the effects of confounders, such as foregrounds, backgrounds, or instrument calibration parameters, the model capacity and loose philosophy of ML can make the results more trustworthy. We also show that there are contexts in which the introduction of ML introduces strong, unwanted statistical biases. For one, when ML models are used to emulate physical (or first-principles) simulations, they amplify confirmation biases. For another, when expressive regressions are used to label datasets, those labels cannot be used in downstream joint or ensemble analyses without taking on uncontrolled biases. The question in the title is being asked of all of the natural sciences; that is, we are calling on the scientific communities to take a step back and consider the role and value of ML in their fields; the (partial) answers we give here come from the particular perspective of physics.
