In my opinion it is simply a software of identifying similar words. So why publishing house and journal editors and making fun of us by saying that this much percentage of plagiarism is there in our paper, thesis and dissertation etc. Like can we people change all alphabets at all? If not then this software must be stopped because this software can not detect plagiarism.
Plagiarism software work by checking similarity. Humans then check which statements are similar and the degree of similarity. My policy is anything more than 4 consecutive words should raise a red flag (the exception is for some generic statements commonly found in most papers).
Any language has finite words but the probability of anyone writing a similar sentence with mine in their paper is like being hit with lightning in a dry winter.
I think complaining about Cross-check or any other plagiarism software is probably misdirected considering the increase in unethical practices among researchers. If all researchers would resort to honesty, good research practices they will be no need for plagiarism software.
I think it's really used to detect linguistic matching rather than scientific plagiarism.
