It's an easy way of educating technique for teachers/ lecturers and on the other hand, students are facing many difficulties without having facilities. Well, since it's not face to face interaction, the impact that comes through reactions and actions which have their own impact on learning gets lessen.
Online teaching has proven positive impact on Adult / Higher education. This goes especially for subjects like business, languages etc where pedagogy can be adapted for online delivery. No doubt there is a definite disadvantage for practical / laboratory based curriculum. Therefore, usefulness of online duration will vary with subjects and also flexibility & adaptability of course delivery tools!
As pointed out by Kalima e-learning looks promising for arts and some humanities unlike for sciences or practicals courses. Besides, we seem to be stuck in the routine way of doing things, the traditonal face to face way such that this digression has some attitudinal challenges. Studies have proven mixed results about the issue under discussion. However, if we discuss the current education mode, we need to address Emergency Remote Learning (ERL) not the regular online learning.
The spread of Covid-19 forced many universities and colleges to think of how to continue teaching while keeping their faculties, staff, and students safe. Under the pressure of public health agencies and due to the pandemic's mysterious nature, many universities suspended all in-person teaching and moved their courses online.
A new mode emerged, and many scholars call for a distinction between the rigorous distance learning and the one done under unusual circumstances. Brown (2020) argues that unless we define the mode, we could communicate and show its purposes; otherwise, the conversation will diverge knowing that online learning is a term of loose interpretation. Hodges et al. (2020), among other scholars, proposed the term Emergency Remote Learning (ERL) to describe online learning under pandemic circumstances from the usual distance learning.
ERL is a provisional shift of instructional mode due to unprecedented circumstances otherwise delivered by FtF, blended or Hybrid courses. Compared to distance learning, ERL shares the use of telecommunicating. However, it aims to support the student learning process by implementing temporarily instructional approach through the crisis instead of re-designing the course (Hodges et al., 2020). The backbone of this mode is any collaboration tools available at teacher/student disposal such as video conferencing, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and other multiple-user platforms such as Blackboard and Canvas.
It is essential to understand that ordinary distance programme involves predesign and planning that takes typically from six to nine months which if it is done probably will ensure the quality of the teaching (Brown, 2020). Such a programme's effectiveness does not depend entirely on the teaching; instead, some other requirements and resources facilitate student engagement and social support. In contrast, to design a fully online programme that replaces an existing face to face one with its unique pedagogical characteristic and learning objectives, the best instructional designers of both environments requires more time to achieve such course.
ERL is a sudden and unprecedented design created under the pressure of time, resources, and other administrative impediments that surround the design and the performing of such mode. Therefore, it should be defined according to its characteristics. Here are some significant points that may demonstrate the differences according to Hodges et al. (2020) in the article "The Difference Between Emergency Remote Teaching and Online Learning":
* Emergency remote teaching (ERT) is meant to be a temporary shift from the usual teaching modes. It happens when teaching becomes remote (or distant). This takes what would have otherwise been face-to-face or hybrid teaching and transforms it to become digital education. In the other hand, Online learning is a method of instruction that takes place over the internet. Online learning was created to leverage technology and allow students to earn degrees and/or attend school without having to be in an academic setting.
*While online learning can be used all the time, ERL is used when a crisis occurs that necessitates schools to shut down, emergency remote learning may be in the form of online lessons, radio, or blended learning solutions.
*Online learning can take the form of blended, hybrid and flipped learning where ERL is designed purposely to be remote and distant learning. Thus ERL is an exception to the primary mode of instruction, either online or face to face.
*In online learning, all resources are accessible, however, the sudden shift ERL may cause lack of resources.
*Most importantly, in the online environment, students are voluntarily enlisting while in ERL they did not have a choice.
That has been said, online and Emergency Remote Learning (ERL) vary in their pedagogical characteristics, potentialities, and limitations, and therefore they introduce different learning experience for learner and teacher.
I am afraid I have to disagree with you that online is "an easy way of educating technique for teachers/ lecturers". It is true that the shift to online learning can enable more flexible experience of teaching and learning, in that asynchronous sessions, in particular, allows students to access the material anywhere and anytime. However, the rapid shift is shocking and unprecedented for faculty members, lecturers, and students.
Many universities and colleges are equipped with Information Technology (IT) team(s) and staff who may support the transition and provide technical aid to lecturers and students to learn and use online services. However, IT teams have limited capacities, and no matter how hard they tried, they will not support all faculty in such unprecedented time.
Therefore, many lecturers and students felt the imposed transition confusing and stressful. It is challenging for lecturers to create well-designed and organised and meaningful learning course under such circumstances, and for learners, the pressurised efforts to learn online along with the very tensed context add a negative association to the experience.
It would be unrealistic for unprepared lecturers and students to become expert in distance teaching/learning and take full advantage of online learning possibilities under such unprecedented time. Although, we should acknowledge the heroic efforts of faculty members and lecturers to provide students with the best they can. However, it is unrealistic to expect a fully functional online course designed in few weeks compared with an ordinary distance course designed from the beginning and design between six to nine months.
Therefore, I think online effectiveness (as a discussion question) can be fairer for both teacher and learners if we looked at teacher/learner's experience in a more specific context, taking into account the pedagogical characteristics of that mode, instead of general assumption about teacher's flexibility and a loose definition of learning instruction.

It is a good method of teaching, but not that effective in most schools as a result of lack of facilities to run it. Again it is not too effective in the teaching of subjects that include hands-on practical areas such as Fine and Applied arts.

In my point of view, As a university lecturer, being face-to-face with the students and daily dealing with them will be more efficient in teaching, as well as the trustiness of students examination will be highly better compared with the E-learning.
The very idea of E-learning gives the students the sense of achievement, mental satisfaction and even a trigger off to start learning as they get new gadgets to use, new topics to research. However when the coin is flipped over the teachers and parents get the brunt of failures dissatisfaction and low grades results. The discussion can go from positive to countering it, therefore keeping in view I am of a strong opinion that the classroom, meeting with classmates playing, discussing, handwriting their work along side E-learning as extra inputs could make the learning process more productive.
