We all know that exercise can contribute to neurogenesis. In fact, one review study talked about basal ganglia volume increase associated with exercise/physical activity. Researchers are exploring every way possible for exercise therapy to improve the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. So could neurogenesis work as one of the mechanisms by which the progress of Parkinson's could be slowed? I know it is far fetched to consider reversal of the disease but if brain volume increases are possible with healthy individuals, what about the potential for people with Parkinson's? In addition to this, exercise may stimulate dopaminergic activity in the brain so there is at least a glimmer of hope involving a combination of strategies!
