Formic acid reacts with the silica gel. It forms a salt. This is undesirable. Clog holes. Reduced surface area silica. The eluent is adjusted for leachables. Use the recommended eluent.
Dear Dr. Yuri Mirgorod, instead of using Formic acid, the another alternative is acetic acid? However, acetic acid seems to have a very strong smell and must use in the fume hood if I'm not mistaken? Is there any other alternative of additive since my compound form tailing if I don't add 1% formic acid to the solvent system?
Thanks Dr. Yuri, I see, other acids still form salts if used with silica but it's better to use as the compound will form tailing if I don't use acids as additives?
