You go to academic conferences to stay updated about your field of knowledge, to share your research manuscripts with your peers and to do some networking in order to identify academic with same interests. If you mix this with traveling, coferences could be a good opportunity for researchers to disconnect and refresh their ideas.

Well, academic conferences (especially those specialized and small) are a blessing to the new researcher - as there you would be able to learn more about editors of journals, meet some great scholars and meet some editors for journals.
I can share my own experience here - as I was still PhD student - I went on more than one conference - and there I was pleased to listen to the feedback from those academics that helped me improve on my work. In addition, I came to know some editors of journals - and that assisted me to start my writing career through submissions... However, now with the concentration on research (high impact journals) - conferences are having less funding in the budgets of schools - and this might on the long run affect the ability of new researchers to be introduced to key personnel in the fields of their research.

Rafael - I like the question and I like Theodora's response but, where her experiences have been positive mine, generally, are 'mediocre'. I've said on other threads that (more recently) i've gained more 'real outputs' from online meetings - than I have from face-to-face conferences. I've plenty of personal business cards in my office drawer, from past conferences, that have come to nothing. Conferences, to me, have always been a nice distraction and a nice 'academic holiday' - but not much else. Others, I am sure, will disagree - but that is my personal experience.

It depends on the stature of the conference. Not every conference may be academically rewarding but networking in most cases does take place. If you don't get anything academically rewarding, you tend to get self-confidence when you compare your work with other participants. What i don't like about conferences, with few exceptions, is absolute yes to your research paper without properly communicating the merits of accepted manuscripts. There are only a few conferences which are not commercial and give time to you to revise your research papers.
