It is tough only if someone is fully and single-minded dedicated to research. Otherwise, you can maintain a good work-life balance.

To achieve something we need devotion. Work and life balance is really typical but here fixing timely priorities are needed. It would be better to keep balance as much as possible with minor inclination to life.
I agree with Afaq, to keep balancing both research responsibilities and social life is a matter of much concern. I do not want to say it is impossible because nothing is impossible if "there are ways that lead to everything, and if we had sufficient will we should always have sufficient means. It is often merely for an excuse that we say things are impossible."
I agree with you Kamal that family time should be protected but unfortunately it seems that even this time has been unnoticeably decreasing over time along...
It is difficult to balance both research responsibilities and social life. Anyhow, it is a matter of time management and setting priorities.
This is very unfortunate that we are unable to protect our family time due to higher allocation of time for other activities including social sites.
In some advanced countries, it is not really tough to balance between research work & social life. Each one is given its adequate portion of time. But we, in the 3rd world, sometimes do not get the balance right. One of my Arabic classmates, long time ago, came to me angry saying that he went to the cafeteria to ask the Welsh professor a question about research but the professor told him to leave at once. I cooled my classmate down by telling him that he ought to blame himself because of his infringement of the professor’s social life.
Balance can be managed but many times difficult to follow practically, even in holidays research comes sometimes or may be many times with social relations, but it need to be resolved with patience and due care
I consider that although sometimes would be difficult, should be necessary. In my particular case as a young researcher, I've always tried to keep the balance. Also, I should say, my wife, which is also slightly involved in biomedical research, helps me to keep that balance, given the fact that social life for her is more important than to me.
The way I think about it is that I prefer to be useful than satisfying others, this excludes my nidus family which comes first
Yes, Its a difficult task..
But you dnt wont to leave/miss neither..
Then develop a skill to Balance it..
Balance is necessary.

- Roots - Family
- Stem - Self / Researcher
- Leaves, Branches & Fruits - Indicates Balance of Responsibilities
Yes, family is root no doubt but need proper soil first then stem, leaves, branches fruits.
I don't think so, except if you are always try to maximize your (virtual) social media scores!
It depends on how intellectual we are to maintain the equilibrium.
