HI Michael, of course the answer is yes, but I think you are asking about this as a research question. For that I'd say a participatory action learning approach would be ideal. In terms of theory and philosophy, 'lived experience' is at the heart of much adult learning theory (andragogy as opposed to pedagogy). Also consider the role of identity development in learning, maybe going back to Erikson. Philosophically, I'd be looking at philosophies that deal with social transformative education and power (thinking here about Oakes, Freire, Foucault). Then there are issues of race that might need confronting. Where to you stop!? Have you got a context in mind? I trust all's well with you.
It is possible Micheal! I am also thinking context, andragogy or pedagogy (your target?), culture, race, gender, do you want to 'Africanize' the study, Jimela is also right, you might want to "be in it", participatory action learning approach would indeed be ideal.
Ethnomethodology research could help, because it captures the 'voice' of respondents as subjects of the study rather than 'objects' of theorisation. From their responses which relate to their subjective lens, you would then derive content to be used as examples. The latter would be content relevant to your respondents' realities, thus making your pedagogical approach really learner-centred. I always think of problems deriving from learner-irrelevant pedagogies and content, using the exammple of literature that we used for Matric. The reader was The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy. As a Black South African I had no idea what a Mayor was, let alone one from CAsterbridge whose real-life Geography I was not even aware of. This made me 'cram' in order to make the Grade but with very little real understanding of what the book or story was about. Where we use background-reality of the learners those examples make examples relevantly illustrative and explanatory of whatever concept you want to teach or 'flip'. Try the ethnomethodological approach and tell us about your experience.
