I am currently working with Dendrolima pini and would like to store its eggs for a longer period of time >2 month. Does anyone know if you can freeze them or store them in liquid nitrogen?
As far as my knowledge, the eggs can be stored at 12C for 2 weeks only after that it starts to deteriorate. Freezing the eggs would destroy many of its properties.
I use freshly laid eggs. Please prefer to store fresh eggs. When females lays eggs then within few hours eggs incubation period starts depending upon temperature and humidity. it will be so good if you will use fresh eggs for storages. Because if you will use those eggs whos incubation period starts then cold storage damages their internal process by making them unable to hatch.
Thank you very much for the great answer. Did you put the eggs in the freezer directly or did you treat them somehow before freezing (like liquid nitrogen or something like that)?
I just collect fresh eggs from my rearing cages into cleaned petri dishes, wrapped them with Aluminum Foil and directly place them under -80.n
For You: Please check their hatching ability after different days intervals, by which you can determine for how many days you can store eggs for successful hatching.
