Dörnyei says that students are best motivated when they imagine themselves functioning in the future as part of a cosmopolitan international society. Therefore, teachers should help students imagine themselves in this future role.

But how do we do this?  We usually think of culture as being limited to a given country. Is there an "international culture" that stems from this international society? How can we help our students imagine themselves functioning in international society if there is no single uniform way of understanding this international society?
