Unfortunately the latter is the most usual one, for example teaching by frontal reading or frontal speaking. To overcome this traditional teaching at universities and mostly also in schools, you need creativity, consequence, endurance, enthusiasm, empathy, knowledge, and experience (paedagogy, didactic, methodology, persolal sensitivity, ability in communication and solving conflicts, ...)money, external help, and again creativity!! I am sure, this all together comes near to being an artist who practice art.

The teaching in all schools at all levels, including kindergarten, is an art. Also, in my opinion, the difficulty of teaching is inversely proportional to the age of the students, at least up to a certain age. Therefore, all teachers must be strongly motivated and to have very great talent. I believe that the art of teaching is the most important as it has to form the future citizens ie our children who are those who will continue social, cultural, scientific progress etc.. That progress we have inherited from our fathers, and at whose growth we have devoted the most of our live.

Yes, I say teaching is an art not everybody have that. Some teachers explain in such a way you need not even study again or forget. Each one has their own style, you cannot imitate. I still remember some of my school teachers lessons how they taught.

Teaching is an art and a craft!

Teaching of course is a profession, and to do it properly one need to have good knowledge and a lot of experience (research experience especially if you teach in university). But, knowledge and experience without having the good communicative skill is nothing. A good teacher must have a natural gift or a talent to communicate or to  "orchestrate" the dialogue between him and students. As a talent, teaching can be nurtured of course.

Teaching is an art in the sense that teaching can be performed with such skill and grace that, the experience can be aesthetic. Teachers, like painters, composers, actresses, and dancers, make judgments based on qualities that unfold during the course of action. Teachers are creative in using different methods of teaching in order to make lesson a nice experience for students. The teacher's activity is not dominated by prescriptions or routines but is influenced by qualities and contingencies that are unpredicted. What teaching achieves at the end is often e creative process and it can't be twice the same. Thus, beside the given scientific information, teaching can be seen as a source of aesthetic experience.

Making the same activity in an artistic way attracts people's attention. Like wise teaching can definitely be considered as an art to make it rejuvenating continuously,to reach young minds.

There are only a few artists who integrate their visitors/students into their work. Usually artits work allone and present their work to the audience.

Second aspect: Regarding teaching it is known that the best effect in learning is doing it by your self.

There is a discrepancy! Therefore in my opinion and experience a teacher should be a moderator or coach and let the students work. Than he will be much more successful than the artist teacher standing in front of his class speaking all the time.

It would be wonderful if teachers (at the university) tried to do their best and taught as painters paint. Hopefully, some of us approach this “standard” or do a similar resolution.

However, to teach as a painters paints needs freedom in the society, and freedom at the university. I am afraid, this is a deep and vast subject and my time is limited. And once more, for teaching as an artist paints, composes, writes etc. teachers need phantasy. A big dose of imagination and courage.

This artistic argument has also led to what I think might be one of the most problematic misconceptions about teaching:  if teaching is an art, then aren't our best teachers simply born to stand in front of the classroom in the same way that those who are talented in other pursuits come by their skills naturally?  I think the answer to this is a resounding "No," and it should be said that many artists balk at the idea that their success has more to do with natural gifts than with hard work.  In particular, the notion that good teaching is innate can sometimes be demoralizing (“I’m just not good enough, and I never will be"), or it can serve as a convenient excuse not to improve (“I’m just not gifted in that way, so why bother”).  I won’t deny that some people are inherently more gifted at public speaking than others, but it is simply not true that people are born to be excellent teachers, and the perpetuation of this myth ultimately does higher education more harm than good.

Because outstanding teaching is primarily about creating the conditions in which our students can learn most effectively, being an excellent teacher does not hinge on genetic predisposition, but—instead—on a solid understanding of how human beings learn (particularly, but not exclusively, in connection with a given discipline) and on having a genuine empathy for students.  Also:  a lot of hard work...

I continue my contribution: theoretically everybody producing outstanding performance can be called artistic like accomplishment.

However, we should be careful. What is widely thought as outstanding performance cannot be that. Real performance and its social or professional judgement cannot be the same. An example: many of us mentioned in earlier threads that cheating with publications may approach 30% among scientists. Not to speak on official judgements of university teachers. These judgements are often but reflexions of an interest net. One may say that the students’ evaluations should be determinant. This is but a dangerous area because many students – these days – are so ignorant and lack the culture. Thus, I think, it is practically impossible to measure the real quality of teaching.

The best teacher award most universities give is a joke. Are we competing for some type of an Oscar nominations?

I have hardly tried to transfer knowledge as well as to maintain interest in students. I have done this over 25 years. However, it seems in vain. Most of students (at least 80%) do not pay attention to lectures, practical work, any activity to the subject. They cannot even remember what I told them 5 minutes ago. They do not know and estimate culture – nobody reads a book, can remember a poem which was obligatory to know in elementary or high school. I pray for questions but they cannot and do not want to ask any question and still less to answer them. What about with this kind of youth. I hope the situation is better in Germany!

I think its no matter of nation or language. Its a matter of motivation of the young people. We must tell them to learn, not to be singular and important without any knowledge or effort, just because they are our beloved children.
