I tested a 5 story steel frame on a shake table. but I forgot to calculate the total mass of the building. Can I calculate it by using the accelerometer data? if yes, Please help.
You can only approximate the mass. One approach is to use free-vibration response, either from free-vibration tests you may have conducted, or from the structural response after the table input had ceased at the end of the test. You can conduct an eigenvalue analysis of the structure using unit masses and compare the computed frequency or frequencies to those that were measured to determine the mass. This calculation requires that you know the distribution of mass, as well as the distribution and magnitude of the stiffness properties. The best results would come from free-vibration response measured before the structure was damaged. For more information, see Chapter 10 of Anil Chopra’s “Dynamics of Structures” book.
