Is it possible that a carboxylate group gets detached from parent ring and forms bond via two oxygen atoms with metal during solvothermal synthesis?

I tried to synthesize a MOF solvothermally in DMF using a Carboxylate linker. After the SC-XRD we found that there was a COO- group detached from benzene ring bound to Metal ion in bent shape which is very unusual. If anybody has/had encountered the same problem please help. I will be grateful. Thanks.
