For writing binomial names of organisms we usually write a capital first letter for genus while all small letters for species. For example: Staphylococcus aureus. What if we are writing all block letter words along with a binomial name (usually done while writing titles), is it okay to use block letters for binomial names as well along with other block letter words?
Example: EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDY OF STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS INFECTIONS.
In above example, would it be okay to use block letters to write binomial name, since all other words are written using block letters?
Its a matter of Editorial discretion. The generic name and the specific epithet in a title with all capital letters is not incorrect.
It is not good. The essence of italicizing and starting the species name in small letters would be defeated as the emphasis would be compromised and the names would look like any other word
Hello Muhammad, I beg to disagree with Subir. There is no hard and fast rule about writing titles of articles. Some editors use the sentence format, some also use initial caps for all words while some still use upper-cases all through. However, there is a rule governing binomial nomenclature. It is incorrect, within the boundaries of science, to play down on the binomial rule (initial caps for generic names and lower- case for specific epithet) and use all upper-case for binomial nomenclature. No editorial discretion should attempt to destroy age-long scientific standards. Scientific Journal Editors are here reminded that 'a rule is a rule' and all players should respect it and play by it. Science in itself operates on rules, methods or protocols. If it is such a big deal, then article title should be recast and the binomial name removed from the title. My very humble opinion.
For the purpose of title all capital letters may be allowed but in running matter the binomial names would be in italics as you have mentioned for Staphylococcus aureus.
There are techniques to follow when doing certain things for universal clarity. Science is universal, so rules have been put in place for guidance. One thing should not have different meanings, title is exception.
