When performing HMA mix design by Marshall test according to the MS-2(7th), the mechanical hammer was selected, is it necessary to check the compaction number by the manual operation, and why to do it? Especially, is the same way for the 6-inch Marshall test?

both of the manual and mechanical hammers for preparing Marshall specimens are standardized with the same weight and height of fall, i think it is not significant to check the variation in performance.
Hello, As Saad has noted, the two methods are intended to be the same so correlation is not necessary. However, my experience is that the automated/mechanical process is significantly more repeatable so you will find increased variability in results when using the manual method - not to mention getting a sore arm if preparing a lot of samples. Thank you very much to give me a hand, the AASHTO R68-15 section 3.2.2 and AI MS-2(7th) section7.2.4 both metioned the correlation procedure, it is really confused me.
When performing automated operation, I agree with yours' opinion. it is due to many varaibles exists in the manual procedure.
