This question is more about the basic theory of doing BOD and then applying the concept to a type of waswater that contains extremely reclacitrant compounds which cannot be degraded in 100 years (let's say microplastic, or PFOS, or naphthenic acids). As we know, BOD is performed to study the biodegradable fraction of organic matter for wastewater. However, if our wastewater is extremely difficult to degrade biologically, and we know it very well, why we need to do this test?

If someone is treating wastewater (it may containing recalcitrant compounds), BOD test is performed to measure the organic matter degradation/removal efficiency of the treatment system. It should be performed during the biodegradation studies of organics.
