LD Slag is produced in steel making in huge quantity. Disposal of LD slag is a big environmental concern. LD slag consists approximately 40 - 50 % CaO and 5 - 10% MgO. Use of LD slag in Sintering process recovers CaO, MgO and FeO. Due to High CaO content lime can be replaced by LD slag.
Use of LD slag in sintering process is not done for Cost-economic factor but mainly due to its environmental effect.

Pot Sinter tests were performed where the Dephosphorised LD slag flux (DELF) powder replaced 80% of the limestone used in the normal sinter. The fired sinters prepared through pot-sintering tests were found to meet the technical indices for suitability as a raw material for Blast Furnace. Since, LD slag is still considered as a waste material from Steel Plant, the use of DELF is recommended.
Extraction of Fe Metal existing like bulk ( skulls) , metallic droplets as load for LD or EAF containing more than 80% Fe metal, or for blast furnace loading if containing more than 56% Fe metallic and as oxides;
The content of free CaO and MgO make it attractive for the sintering process; the fine fraction of 0 - 8 mm can be used for agglomeration taking into account the content of S and P2O5; if these two components can be removed from the furnace's slag parameters, however an important effect may be the increase of FeO in the agglomerate over the 4-5% limit.
Multiple possibilities to be used in addition to road construction, to improving acid agriculture soil , make this material more and more considered a byproduct rather than waste
