Hello!

I am trying to create a scale for my master's, I collected data and performed a confirmatory factor analysis. However my original model did not fit the data.

I then decided to split the sample (500 participants) in half. On the first random half, I performed a CFA and then modified it. I modified the model quite a bit. The modifications make sense theoretically. I had to add second order variables to the model (which made more sense than my original model) and also removed 8 out of 28 items that did not load well.

Once I created a new model that fit the sample well, I then performed a CFA on the second half of the sample using the new modified model, and it fit well!

I just wanted to check whether it was acceptable for me to split the sample randomly in half to do this?

And also, is it acceptable to make this many modifications to the model? If I can justify it theoretically?

I have added images of the two structures.

Any advice would be helpful!

Thank you in advance.
