i think that the purpose of the connection is to maintain zero potential at neutral point. It can be connected to PE pit with separate connection conductor. the common PE terminal should not be connected.

I can recommend you some articles/papers for answering this interesting question with some theoretical background .(in the link#1 the most interesting things for us begin since p. 34). Despite some of it related to the two-level inverter, it could be helpful for basic understandings (at least, it was for me). Also, there is a good conversation about difference of N and PE right in the RG (link#3).
