I am confused about that is fermentation an aerobic or anaerobic process or both? I have read somewhere that "Fermentation does not necessarily have to be carried out in an anaerobic environment" but also read that " Fermentation is anaerobic because it can make ATP without using oxygen".

Is organic acid production by microorganisms a fermentative process or not?

Please clear my doubts with your valuable answers.
