Hey everyone,
I require an E. coli strain suitable for the utilization of unusual fatty acids, especially branched-chain FAs. I know that it is possible to activate the endogenous anabolism for branched-chain FAs via the introduction of FabH from Bacillus.
I wonder if it would be also just enough to add branched-chain FAs directly into the culture media and FadD activates them as Acyl-CoAs which are then degraded or used in further pathways.

FabH exhibits no activity with branched-chain acyl-CoA esters, but heterologous expression of the Bacillus subtilis fabH gene leads to the formation of branched-chain fatty acids in E. coli.
