An interesting question for those of us who study design.  It is often said that there is a designerly way of knowing.  This is a long discussion but in brief there is no real theory that enables designers to work and most of what they know is about solutions and objects that they might be able to make use of in a new context.  So little semantic or theoretical knowledge and a great deal of episodic knowledge.

WHen I first wrote about his I used an example from my studnet days.  We had to be able to draw from memory almost any famous building in history for out history of architecture exam.  This is just too difficult to do so we devised easily memorable sets of rules to construct these drawings.   A good example I sue is the very well known plan of Sancta Sophia in Istanbul.  To get to a plan of this you can draw a number of squarea adn put circles in them and make various adjustments. It got us through our exams.  Some 50 years later I found I could not recall these rules at all.  Not surprising as they had not been used for half a century.  However I could clearly remember the day we deveised them, that we sat at a particular place in Christ Church meadow in Oxford, it was as unny day and we had some bottles of dry white wine.  I can remember who was there and bits of what they wore etc.  Thus the episodic memory is still well alive but the theoretical one has faded.

For a whole raft of reasons to do with design cognition designers must work in this sort of way using episodic memory to make links and connections that create stimuli for new ideas in a previously unvisited context.

I wonder to know the answer to the following question. Let us not seriously ;) assume that a man was ALONE (starting from, say 3 years old boy)  in the island. Suppose he somehow was alive till say 30 years old. Could his episodic memory be created or not? I understand that my question is at least strange;). But did you know about similar research? By the way prof. Jean William Fritz Piaget pointed 100 years ago about the crucial role of community in the memory creation.

So the episodic memory exists in our brains when we are born? I am right?

The man on the iland may be brain damaged, fallen flat on the shore or a rock or bitten by an animal . I can not guarantee you that all his function developed normally. He might have attracted malaria by mosquitoes or  he may have attracted Tick-borne infections with consequent meningitis and encephalitis and so on.  He may suffer from all kinds of neglect and amnesia that obscure his episodic memory, you name it, everything can go wrong during the development when alone on an iland without any medications, surgery,  or other methods available. 

Episodic memory is the memory of autobiographical events (times, places, associated emotions, and other contextual who, what, when, where, why knowledge) that can be explicitly stated. It is the collection of past personal experiences that occurred at a particular time and place

You did not answer the question "the ability to create the episodic memory is a property of our brain or it is in some sense influenced or formed by human community (here I mean also the case of human evolution)?"

I am not God not even a Sir, I do not know!

But the human community teach a child to do so many things!!! :) You know the ape (see youtube!) can also be taught to understand English language and answer to it using surrounding objects. But this project headed by Stanford or Harvard university is not published in serious journals. We do not know about this. It is a pity!

I see around myself that many animals (cats, birds, etc.) seems to me are able to think.. But as in case of dolphins WE, HUMANS (! :)) can not understand their language! The nature is laughing at us. Are we clever, or are we just "special ants" to repeat what can do from our childhood memory: to talk, to joke, play piano, football.., to make bombs? And nothing other.. But we die after all this long boring song.. Maybe something wrong is in this global way of civilization?
