If we want to analyze the flow over a cylinder placed in the center of a channel, due to the complete geometric symmetry, we can use periodic boundary conditions instead of simulating the entire geometry. However, when we examine the simulation, we notice that the vortices behind the cylinder do not shed simultaneously from the top and bottom of the cylinder. Instead, for example, a vortex first sheds from the top and then from the bottom.

Despite the axial symmetry and the expectation that the simulation should also be symmetric—because the purpose of an axially symmetric simulation is to observe all occurrences at the top as they occur at the bottom—why do the vortices shed alternately rather than in pairs? Can it be said that this type of simulation is incorrect if done with axial symmetry?
