I really need some assistance with Herzberg's theory. I don't see he makes any distinction between job satisfaction and motivation. His list of 'motivators' help employees achieve 'job satisfaction', as he indicates. If I want to develop interview questions, which term should I use? Using both might confuse the participants!

I would highly recommend this dissertation. Although it is a bit old, its language is simple and the narration flows smoothly. It also offers an instrument in the appendices. You can take it as a point of departure in your instrument design.

In Herzberg's theory, 'motivators' like achievement, recognition, and responsibility lead to job satisfaction when they are present. On the other hand, 'hygiene factors' like salary, company policies, and working conditions can cause job dissatisfaction if the are inadequate, but improving these factors doesn't necessarily make people more satisfied with their jobs.
So, when developing interview questions, it's better to focus on 'job satisfaction' when asking about Herzberg's 'motivators.' Using the term 'motivation' might confuse participants because Herzberg doesn’t directly link 'motivators' to 'motivation' as other theories do.
