Yes, Its is definitely beneficial to each of them but the effect would be more powerful on women. A rise in minimum wages is found to resulted in reduction in gender based wage inequalities.
The consensus its still that increasing minimum wages reduces employment. This is derived by classic economic theory as early as in the 1970s (see e.g. Mincer 1976 and Gramlich 1976) and it is generally supported by empirical research (see Neumark & Wascher 2007, for a survey). This was challenged in the 1990s by Card & Krueger (1992, 1995) who argued that the minimum wage increase can actually diminish unemployment. A theoretical background for that is derived by monopsony (e.g. Manning 1993) and search and matching (e.g. Moser & Stähler 2009) models. However, the Card and Krueger findings are still widely challenged in mostly econometric grounds.
