As an online or blended learning lecturer or an ICT specialist working at Distance Learning Department, how have you perceived the integration between Learning Management System (LMS) and Academic Management System at Higher or Vocational Education Institutions?
I'd like to read opinions and feelings from online, F2F and blended learning lecturers but also from ICT specialists working with this.

As I have understood it, LMS (learning management systems) and CMS (course management systems) were historically coming from different directions in the digitalisation of higher education.
LMSs were for reporting and keeping track of credits, exams and similar ( proof of learning, accreditation) in a digital form, developed by university administrators. CMSs on the other hand, were for teaching purposes and developed by teachers and instructional technologists and designers , keeping track of and managing access to digital course material, but also integrating tools for interaction, etc. ”School in a box” to deliver ”distance” educations or to work as a digital component in ”blended” education/teaching. Sometimes are CMSs called VLEs as well/instead.
Then, from both directions, comes integration attempts and ambitions to include more or less all of it in a platform for all things education, a kind of operative system to run applications on. Right now I have a feeling that the LMS term often seem to stand for it all. This may be because of the term ”learning” becoming so popular to use also for ”teaching”, which is very inadequate, as I see it. It is exactly the link teaching- learning that always has been the problem. We cannot ignore that.

so - do you mean integration also with other university system, or are we still talking about a credits database versus digital material and functions for teaching?

Generally, universities have difficulties in obtaining information in an integrated way their information systems, for example, Learning Management System (LMS) and Academic Management System, a large part of these systems works in an isolated and without perspective way for offer services in an integrated way. In this context, the proposed solution uses Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) through Web Services and Cloud Computing in order to implement a model of integration between Moodle Learning Management System and Academic Management System Q-Academic of Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Piauí - IFPI. And in this way it contributes for the better management between these systems in which it is increasing the quality of information provided for users and reducing the possibility of mistakes caused by manual handling process information. In my university in Venezuela - ULA, there is no integration between LMS and the Academic MS.
Moodle courses are only for a few ones in a couple of Faculties, those that some unknown people choose.
As a result, more than 2300 university undergraduate and graduate courses still lack an LMS.

When I was the chancellor of one of the universities, I was in charge of this kind of process. The key issue was the reorganization of the organizational structure and the implementation of modern IT systems facilitating the university management process, planning classes, etc.
