Insulin is a hormone that is produced naturally in our bodies. Its main role is to allow cells throughout the body to uptake glucose (sugar) and convert it into a form that can be used by these cells for energy. Without insulin, we cannot survive, and death from diabetes was a common occurrence.
Nowadays human insulin prepared by recombinant DNA technology is used for treatment of diabetes. However, previously bovine and porcine (animal insulin) were used against diabetes.
Type II diabetes is the common form of dibetes of adults. It develops mainly due to loss of sensitivity of insulin receptors in cells. In most of the cases, blood of the diabetic patients contain normal level of insulin, but it fail to act normally due to inability of insulin receptors.
Different medicines of diabetes work in different ways. Some stimulate the insulin receptors, some work on kidney and so on.
Injection of insulin from outside of the body can also stimulate less sensitive receptors due to their more quantity.
The insulin used previously was obtained from animal sources.
Presently, humen cells are used to synthesise insulin in artificial laboratory conditions and then marketed for use.
The insulin synthesised by humen cell culture is considered as better than that of animal source.
