In the park reference frame (dq0), how does one calculate the angle between the d and q components?

using atan(VTD/VTQ) gives rise to instability because of the division.

But how else do you calculate the angle?

If you have two vectors u and v, the angle between the two called alpha is such that the scalar product of u and v is the product of the norms of u and v times the cosine of alpha:

= ||u||.||v||. cos(alpha)

Does it help?

There is not only the tangent in geometry...
