If the d axis of an induction machine is oriented with the maximum of the stator flux, how does it result in the stator q axis voltage (Vqs) being equal to the terminal voltage and stator d axis voltage (Vds) being zero?

This is basic requirement of field-oriented control!! You should have a look on the following top paper : Blaschke, F.: The Principle of Field Orientation as Applied to the New Transvector Closed-Loop Control System for Rotating Field Machines. Siemens Review 34(5), 217-219.

Like Mohamed says, Blaschke was one of the first guys to explain the details of the technique.
But if you can not locate the paper, you may wish to consult the following book:

to keep the id=0 and the total current will be the iq direction current, in this case, the motor current can be controlled through controlling the iq direction current, hence the motor torque is directly proportional with the iq current, which mimic the characteristics of dc motor (separately excited dc motor) (torque is directly proportional with the torque) this is obtained at constant field operating region not flux weakening, if id not equal zero this means flux weakening operating region.
