in SPSS, what analysis could I use to determine if a series of events that occur over a 12 hour period are randomly occurring vs. clustered together, and can I compare the random vs. cluster between two different types of days (like weekend vs. weekday). I thought of a Poisson distribution, but not sure if that is correct. thanks.
I have a series of events that occur on a day that eventually a major disruption occurred. We want to know if those events seem to be clustered together. in other words, was there a rapid succession of events that occurred clustered together that led up to the major disruption? in contrast, we have days when it appeared that events seemed to be randomly distributed throughout the day and no major event occurred.
I thought about the Poisson distribution and treating the events as count data. but I'm looking to see if during a 12 hour time frame are events clustered or randomly spread out during that time frame. any ideas? I use SPSS. thanks.
