Emmanuel Enoch Thompson ---- We make tools to extend our abilities. We often imagine ideas and tools that can't presently be made or is beyond our ability to think about. We often dream and wonder about ourselves, others and the world around us. Ethics are not separate. they are part of wondering, creating. We make a zillion of them during thinking, designing and fabricating. What you designated as separate.... is there all the time. Regardless if you conscious of it or not. As an individual we express our experiences of our lives by making things. Ethics is part of what an expression is. And that expression is not limited to mankind. Its in all life forms. To all this add - "change". Makes everything complex. With in all this there are zero major ethical issues. Those issues are us. And what we call the life-force.
Emmanuel Enoch Thompson , ... Ethical issues may range from health to privacy issues in design and manufacturing. However, on my scale of preference, sustainability in terms of environmental impact is one of the most important ethical issues to consider i.e. producing electronics/devices with the use of sustainable materials, methods and processes. This entails taking into account the product's complete lifecycle, from design to manufacturing and even disposal. There is also the issue of e-waste. Creating long-lasting, recyclable electronics will help cut down on electronic waste. To ensure environmental sustainability, this also will demand ensuring that appropriate disposal and recycling techniques are adopted.
And, with reference to Lee Clawson 's thoughts, we (as individuals e.g. designers, researchers, manufacturers etc.) are at the center of it all.
