Hi,
probably every geneticist knows the terms "in cis" and "in trans" - e.g. for description whether two mutations are localised on the same chromosome or not. Could you please tell me, where these terms come from? (I was once asked such question during a presentation on general genetics and promissed to give an answer later. I know about these terms also in chemistry, but I can not find any reliable (historical) resource.)

I'm not sure if you're looking for this kind of answer, but the words cis and trans are (like a lot of words/names in science) latin. cis means something like "on the same side" and trans means "across". This explains why the two words are used in your case ans also in chemistry.
Thank you, Ariane, for your answer. In fact, I should have been clearer: I would like to search for the historical introduction of the terms in cis and in trans into genetics.
