It's a struggle for life and I don't see any solution.
If we focus on the second part of the question, the challenge could be threefold, the student needs to find innovative ways to present their ideas, supervisors recognition of passive engagement with subject as opposed to being active and the educational system and its flexibility on newly invented matters.

In my personal view on doctorate studies, students should always know more than their supervisors. Because the students supposed to be the subject matter expert / specialist in his or her area of research. Whereas their supervisors are experienced researchers that play the role to guide the students on the right track to complete their research.
Thank you for sharing your opinions with us, here, in my opinion when I see every day a supervisor who underestimate his students, and who believes to have all the knowledge in his head about his specialty, and when he terrorize his students because they have made a mistake or whatever, while sometimes it is the teacher who made the error and continues to pass his mistakes to others and he does not give a chance to students to express themselves, I noticed this especially in the university hospitals.
Supervisors may have forgotten that he too had once taught. I wish you strong nerves and to endure.
I agree with Han. While the student may know the subject matter, he/she lacks the "research" experience, so there is some balance between student and supervisor and not "hierarchy" per se.

However this info is still unorganized, uneven in content. You still need the
trained instructor.
Most students do not seem to be that motivated, to work on their own. They need an organized course.
