Currently looking at Hamilton Star (current favorite) and BC Biomek 4000, but am open to other suggestions (except Tecan - they gave us an exorbitant qoute which we can't afford). Our main needs are some very complex PCR setups (a lot of sigle channel transfers plus a lot of plate-to-plate multichanel copying) and DNA extraction with magnetic beads or spin columns. Any positive or negative experience welcome.
We have an epMotion 5075 liquid handling robot that was bought 5 years back and it works absolutely fine for complex PCR setups..However, I am not sure whether it has DNA extraction capabilities..maybe eppendhorf has come up with something better meanwhile...all the best in your search for a good liquid handling robot...

We have both Hamilton (Starlet) and Beckman NXp in our lab and both work very well. If pushed I would say that the Hamilton has had less technical issues than the Beckman.

in our lab we use Biomek NX (bought 2 years ago) and Biomek 4000 (bought a few months ago). Before we bought the 4000, we had been using Biomek 2000. Both Biomek 2000 and 4000 are quite reliable with not many technical issues. The software that comes with the 4000 is intuitive and quite easy-to-use.
On the other hand, we've been having quite many technical issues with Biomek NX, so I would recommend buying an extended warranty with free technical help from BC together with this machine.
We use the machines mainly for cell seeding/viability assays/microplate coating.
Thank you all for your help! We're currently getting the best offer on a Hamilton Star, and it seems the best-fitting machine for our needs. Considering your answers and other research I did they also seem among the most reliable, so it looks like Hamilton it is. :)
