By ensuring that interfacial adhesion is optimum which in turn can be achieved by either chemically modifying the surface or by mechanical interlocking.
Sometimes the affect of CTE mismatch can also be minimized by taking into account the anisotropy of one of the materials i.e., if the CTE of one of the materials is different in different directions, we might design the composite by aligning the two surfaces such that those directions which have minimal CTE mismatch are aligned.
