Recently, I have been exposed to data that prior research suggested would have a particular factor structure. When conducting confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with those data, model fit has been quite poor - i.e., the goodness-of-fit indices have not met commonly accepted criteria.

Under circumstances such as that, do you think it is appropriate to use exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with the same data to try to identify why model fit with CFA was unsuccessful?
